Eat Your Way To A Healthy Smile

How you eat can be just as important as what you eat when it comes to maintaining a great-looking smile.  Wilmette Dental offers a few simple tips that can help help keep your smile its healthy best.

Eat carbs at mealtime.  Carbs such as as breads and chips break down into sugar that can increase the growth of oral bacteria.  But, when you eat carbs with larger amounts of food (as you would during a full meal rather than just a snack), you produce a much larger amount of saliva.  That saliva helps wash away the food particles that attract nasty oral bacteria.

Sip with a straw.  Most sodas, sports drinks and juices contain acid, which can erode tooth enamel. Sipping those types of beverages through a straw that's positioned at the back of the mouth limits their contact with teeth.

Follow a meal or snack with tea.  Tea contains polyphenol, an antioxidant plant compound that prevents tooth-decaying plaque from adhering to teeth.

Take your calcium.  Dietary calcium from cheese, milk and yogurt strengthens the alveolar bone in the jaw -- and that's the bone that helps hold teeth in place!

Increase Vitamin C.  This powerhouse vitamin helps keep teeth and gums healthy.
